According to a new report released by IHS Markit, the US Department of Energy (DOE) released the Future of Solar Energy Study on September 8, 2022, detailing the important role solar will play in decarbonizing the nation's power grid, despite rising production costs.   The study suggests that solar power has the potential to supply 40 percent of the nation's electricity, drive deep decarbonization of the grid and create as many as 1.5 million jobs without raising electricity prices.  The study's findings, which call for large-scale and equitable deployment of clean energy, underscore the Biden administration's efforts to address the climate crisis and rapidly increase access to renewable energy across the United States.  

Key findings of the study include:  

A clean grid requires the large-scale, equitable deployment of diverse, sustainable energy sources  

A decarbonized electricity sector will create millions of jobs across industries  

New tools to increase grid flexibility, such as energy storage and advanced inverters, as well as transmission expansion, will help deliver solar power across the United States  

A grid based on renewable energy would significantly reduce health spending and save costs  

Further reductions in the cost of solar energy will require supportive decarbonization policies and advanced technologies
